Compostables are here & they're beautiful!
You're a ROLL MODEL business with a laser focus on sustainable, socially-conscious products, and Konsiderate is ready for you!
Konsiderate has the options and capacity to deliver bioplastic products which are compostable - the new frontier in sustainability. A step up from biodegradable, Konsiderate's certified compostable range is made from corn starch. But hold up - let's start with the basics. What exactly is the difference between degradable, biodegradable and compostable?
Information about bioplastic options can be VERY confusing.
Unfortunately, that’s because not all options are created equal, and some unscrupulous dealers like to hide behind the confusion, while offering a product that’s not as friendly as it seems. At Konsiderate, we’re always totally transparent. That’s because we’re the real deal: true bioplastic products that meet Australian Compostable Standards (which are amongst the strictest in the word!)
While degradables are a first step in the right green direction, they are still an oil-based plastic which have environmental impacts.
So it’s generally friendlier to opt for BIOPLASTIC products. But beware, not all bioplastics are equally green and friendly.
Biodegradable simply means a product can be decomposed by microorganisms and turned into natural compounds, like water. This may happen quickly or over a very long period. Conventional oil-based plastics can be considered biodegradable (but leave toxic residues).
Biobased refers to a product created from biomass (plants). This sounds great, but there are some biobased products that don’t biodegrade (like sports drink bottles). These are known as “durable plastics” which currently make up 75% of Australia’s biobased products (and that’s a bit alarming!)
Bioplastics which are both biodegradable and biobased! These are the truest form of green wins - and the type of product offered within the Konsiderate Certified Compostable range.
Compostable is a term which refers to a product which meets certain strict standards - usually that they are bioplastics which are both biobased and biodegradable.
The Australian Standard requires that plastic products must be comprised of 50% organic materials; and 90% of the product must biodegrade within 180 days in compost, without toxic effects on plants or earthworms.
Konsiderate Compostable products are made from corn starch and are certified as biodegradable and compostable to Australian and International standards: Australia AS 4736 (Commercial) and AS 5810 (Home Compostable); European En13432; American ASTM D 6400.
Rapidly renewable & sustainable.
